Meaning and origin of the Fiedler last name

Meaning of the Fiedler last name: fiddle player. Fiedler is an occupational name for a fiddle player, from Middle High German videlære. Fiddlers played at weddings, markets and village festivals, and many travelled from place to place. The name is typical of eastern Germany, especially Saxony and Silesia, and was also common among German speakers in Bohemia. Arthur Fiedler, son of an Austrian-born violinist, led the Boston Pops orchestra for nearly fifty years. The fiddle was one of the main instruments of medieval music, and fiddlers were among the most familiar entertainers. The occupational name is also found in the forms Fiedeler and Fidler. In Silesia, the name was especially frequent. After 1945, many German-speaking Fiedler families from Silesia, Bohemia and Moravia were resettled in Germany. Earlier emigrants took the name to the United States in the 19th century.
