Meaning and origin of the O'Toole last name

Meaning of the O'Toole last name: descendant of Tuathal ("ruler of the people"). O'Toole comes from Ó Tuathail, "descendant of Tuathal", a personal name meaning "ruler of the people". The O'Tooles were a leading sept of the Uí Muiredaig of Leinster, first in County Kildare and, after the Anglo-Norman invasion, in the Wicklow mountains, around Imaal and Fercullen. St Laurence O'Toole, archbishop of Dublin in the 12th century, came from this family. The family descends from Tuathal mac Augaire, king of Leinster, who died in 958, and they were kin of the O'Byrnes. In the Wicklow mountains the O'Tooles, with their neighbours the O'Byrnes, resisted English control from the 13th to the 17th century, raiding the Pale around Dublin. Many lost their lands in the Cromwellian confiscations, and some served in the Irish regiments in France and Spain. The name is still most common in Wicklow, Dublin and Wexford, and also in Galway and Mayo, where a separate sept lived. Many O'Tooles emigrated to the United States, England and Australia.
