Meaning and origin of the Schweizer last name

Meaning of the Schweizer last name: swiss, or a dairyman. Schweizer means "Swiss", a name for someone who came from Switzerland or had dealings there. The Swiss cantons took their name from Schwyz. In early modern Germany, Swiss herdsmen were prized for their skill with cattle, and Schweizer also became the word for a dairyman on a large farm. Baden-Württemberg holds the largest share today, and Albert Schweitzer, of Alsace, carried the related spelling. Swiss dairymen and cheesemakers were invited to work on the estates of German princes and landowners from the 17th century, and the name followed them. The spelling Schweitzer is also found, and the related name Schwyzer comes directly from the canton of Schwyz. In Switzerland itself, the surname is less common than in Germany. Many Schweizer families emigrated to the United States in the 18th and 19th centuries, settling in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Wisconsin.
