Meaning and origin of the Carpenter last name
Meaning of the Carpenter last name: carpenter, worker in timber. Carpenter is an occupational name for a worker in wood, from Anglo-Norman carpenter, which replaced the Old English word for a woodwright after 1066. Medieval carpenters built timber houses, roofs, mills and ships, and the trade was found in every town. The name is common across southern England. In America it also absorbed translations of the German Zimmermann and the French Charpentier. John Carpenter was town clerk of London in the 15th century. The Anglo-Norman word came from Latin carpentarius, a maker of carriages, and the trade was central to medieval building, as most houses and many churches were built of timber. Early records show the name as le Carpenter from the 13th century. In Ireland it translated the Gaelic Mac an tSaoir, "son of the craftsman", now usually McAteer. Carpenter families went early to New England and Virginia, and the name is now common throughout the United States.
