Meaning and origin of the Montgomery last name

Meaning of the Montgomery last name: from Montgomery in Normandy. Montgomery comes from the Norman place names Sainte-Foy-de-Montgommery and Saint-Germain-de-Montgommery in Calvados, whose name joins Latin mons, "hill", and a Germanic personal name. Roger de Montgomery, a companion of William the Conqueror, became Earl of Shrewsbury and gave his name to Montgomery in Wales. In Scotland the family settled at Eaglesham and later Eglinton in Ayrshire, and many Montgomerys went to Ulster in the 17th century. Roger de Montgomery held vast lands in Shropshire and Sussex after the Norman Conquest, and his castle at Montgomery gave its name to the Welsh county of Montgomeryshire.
