Meaning and origin of the Elliott last name

Meaning of the Elliott last name: from the personal name Elias or Elliot. Elliott has two sources. In England it comes from Elyot, a medieval diminutive of Elias, the Greek form of the Hebrew Elijah. In Scotland the Elliots were a powerful Border family of Liddesdale and Teviotdale, whose name Black linked with an older form, Elwold. The Scottish branch spells the name Elliot with one t, the English and Irish mostly Elliott. Border Elliotts later settled in Fermanagh and in Ulster. The Border Elliots were one of the riding families of the Middle March, allied at times with the Armstrongs, and the leading family was Elliot of Redheugh. After the Union of the Crowns in 1603, many Border families were moved to Ireland, and Elliotts settled in Fermanagh, where the name is still very common. In England, the name is widespread, especially in Devon, Cornwall and the north. Elliott families emigrated to North America, Australia and New Zealand.
