Meaning of the Frey last name: free man. Frey is a German status name for a free man, from Middle High German vrī, "free". It distinguished a free peasant who owned his land, or owed only light dues, from the serfs and bondsmen who made up much of the medieval rural population. The name is most common in south-west Germany, Alsace and Switzerland, where free peasant communities were especially strong. Free peasants were particularly well known in the Black Forest, the Swabian Alb and the Swiss cantons, where whole communities held their land directly and governed themselves. In Switzerland the name is widespread in Aargau, Zürich and Bern. Frey families were among the many Swiss and Palatine emigrants who settled in Pennsylvania, Maryland and the Carolinas in the 18th century, where the name was sometimes spelled Fry or Fray.
