Meaning and origin of the Watkins last name

Meaning of the Watkins last name: son of Watkin (little Walter). Watkins is a patronymic from Watkin, a medieval pet form of Wat, the usual short form of Walter, a Norman name meaning "ruler of the army". The ending -kin was a popular diminutive in the 13th and 14th centuries. Watkins is above all a name of the Welsh borderlands, most common in Monmouthshire, Herefordshire, Breconshire and Radnorshire, where many families fixed their patronymics late. Walter, from Germanic wald, "rule", and hari, "army", came to England with the Normans and was very popular in the Middle Ages, giving rise to many pet forms such as Wat, Watt, Watkin and Wattie. In Wales the patronymic ap Watkin, "son of Watkin", is recorded from the 15th century, and it became the surname Watkins as English naming customs spread. Variants include Watkiss in the Midlands and Watkinson in Yorkshire. Watkins families emigrated to the American colonies, especially to Virginia and Maryland, and later to Australia and Canada.
